Vintage Oil Lamp

Vintage Oil Lamp

£60.00

Vintage kerosene lamp featuring a hemispherical tank/spinning top design and a green glass base. It includes a glass fireplace lampshade and a brass Kosmos spout. Since the 17th century, oil lamps had replaced candles for domestic lighting. However, it wasn't until 1853 that kerosene, a more efficient liquid oil, was invented by Polish pharmacist Ignacy Łukasiewicz. This mineral oil ignited more easily than vegetable or animal oils and provided a brighter light. Instantly adopted, kerosene lamps became symbols of modernity in the 1960s before eventually fading from common use in remote rural areas. This nostalgic piece will add a retro atmosphere to your home and can be quite handy during power outages.
